Prabowo Subianto Announces Party Leaders Agree to Expel Troubled Lawmakers Starting September 1

Jakarta — President Prabowo Subianto announced that leaders of Indonesia’s political parties have agreed to take firm action against members of parliament deemed problematic. The measure, which will take effect on September 1, 2025, involves the revocation of their parliamentary membership.

“In response to the genuine aspirations of the people, I have received reports from the chairpersons of political parties that they have taken decisive steps against their respective lawmakers, effective September 1, 2025. This includes members of parliament who may have made inappropriate or misleading statements,” Prabowo said in a press briefing at the Merdeka Palace on Sunday (August 31).

Prabowo emphasized that the decision underscores the commitment of party leaders to ensure that legislators remain aligned with the public interest.

“The firm step taken by the political party chairpersons is the removal of their respective members from the House of Representatives,” he stressed.

In addition, parliamentary leaders are said to be preparing to roll back several privileges, including allowances for lawmakers and a moratorium on overseas working visits.

“Parliamentary leaders and party chairpersons have also conveyed that members of the House must always be sensitive to and stand by the interests of the people,” Prabowo added.

The president said he continues to monitor the situation in Jakarta and other major cities. While underscoring the government’s respect for freedom of expression, he warned that anarchic actions leading to casualties would not be tolerated.

“As for law enforcement officers who may have made mistakes or committed violations yesterday, the National Police have already begun an investigation. I have instructed that this be carried out swiftly, transparently, and in a manner open to public scrutiny,” he said.
